We recently had a Moana Themed birthday party and -as always- we did a lot of Moana themed craft in the weeks leading up to the party.
I made these Plumeria/Frangipani flower hair clips for all the party kids as part of their costume/return present. They are easy to make -and so beautiful and authentic looking too- but it was quite a time-consuming job to make 30+ flower hair clips when every petal needed ironing and folding four times! However, when you are just making one or two, it’s easy and fun.
The kids loved them though so it was all worth it in the end.
Use a sharp crayon or gold dust for the middle.
Ingredients
Directions
Start by tracing a flower petal shape onto the foam paper. I prefer using a wooden skewer or toothpick as a pen would leave marks. Cut them out. You will need 6 petals for each flower.
Heat up the iron on the medium heat setting. Each petal needs to be ironed 4 times for about 5-10 seconds each time. Don’t worry about the foam sticking to the iron. It won’t. I have added numbers in the picture below to show the process for each petal. 1: the petal before ironing 2: iron on one side 3 + 4 : iron on the other side and fold the lower right corner in a bit 5: iron top part of the petal again being careful to leave the fold (no 4) and fold the top of the petal down
You now have 6 shaped flower petals
Using your glue gun, add some glue on the lower side of the petal -the side not folded up. Stick another flower petal on top.
Keep adding petals until you have all 6 flower petals glued together.
Finish the flower by gluing petal no 1 and petal no 6 together. This will create the ‘coned’ flower shape.
Colour the middle with gold paint dust or crayons. The gold dust has that advantage that it makes the glue shine a bit. A yellow or dark pink crayon makes the flower look more real.
To make the flower into a hair clip, use two small pieces of felt as shown above. Cut a small hole in the smallest piece and glue it to the hair clip. Glue the longer piece on top to hide the clip.
Glue the flower on top and you have a beautiful frangipani flower hair clip like Moana. Happy crafting!
