Make these cute DIY Animal Bookmarks from recycled ice cream sticks and leftover glitter foam and felt pieces. It’s a quick craft activity that kids can do alone or you can make it a family activity, like we did.
DIY Animal Bookmarks: The perfect craft activity for younger kids
Working together as a team, my 4-year old daughter first decided what animals, we were making, and how they should look. She then painted the sticks while I cut the foam and felt pieces out for her to glue on. Simply put, it was a perfect activity that involved us both and did not take too long either.
Make 2-3 bookmarks in 30 minutes or 6 bookmarks in an hour, it’s up to you!
Each animal bookmark took about 10-15 minutes. Keeping that in mind, it’s up to you how many you want to make and how much decoration you want to add to each animal. As an example, our hen is very simple, but still cute in it’s own way and an easy one to start off with. The crocodile or monkey take a few more pieces of foam paper and felt before they are ready.
In the steps below, I have shown how to make the monkey, crocodile, bee, elephant and pig bookmarks.
Best out of waste DIY Animal Bookmarks
I used old scraps of foam paper and felt for these bookmarks. You know how kids sometimes cut a sun from the middle of the paper? And boom an entire paper has been used and the rest is wastage? Save those scraps next time and make them into something cute and useful. Like these bookmarks. (If you don’t have any scraps, you can obviously go ahead with this project anyways)
Instead of painting the plain ice cream sticks, you can also buy pre-coloured ones from your local art and craft store. It will save you the painting mess that is sure to follow. In the step-by-step guide below, I have made simple pictures of the pieces needed for each of the animals.

Kids can also make these bookmarks by themselves as gift for parents, grandparents or teachers. Who wouldn’t love to own a cute homemade gift like that?
Hope you have lots of fun with this project. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions and don’t forget to tag me on Instagram if you make your own 🙂

Directions
To make the monkey book mark, you will need a brown ice cream stick, two medium-sized googly eyes, light brown felt for the mouth and ears with pink glitter foam inside them.
To make the pig book mark you will need a pink ice cream stick, two medium-sized googly eyes and a curly tail. We used a pink button for the snout and folded the pink felt ears slightly in the middle to resemble real pig ears.
We used a silver coloured ice cream stick for the elephant book mark and blue leather paper for the trunk and ears. We used glitter silver foam paper for the inside of the ears.
We coloured an ice cream stick dark green and used green glitter paper for the mouth, spiky back and "arms". We used one large googly eye.
We coloured an ice cream stick dark yellow and used brown glitter foam paper for the wings, stripes and antennas.
